About

John Freeman

John Freeman is well known for his paintings of the North Yorkshire landscape, and in recent years, working almost exclusively in water colours, has established a reputation for his distinctive Nocturne scenes of the area creating a combination of clarity and warmth not often found in this type of subject.

John Freeman – born in Doncaster in 1942, established his studio in Whitby in 1969. Now well known for his studies of Whitby and its surroundings. Although now "Semi-Retired" John can still be found in his studio, a converted slaughterhouse and Butchers Shop in the heart of Whitby`s East side, on Tuesday & Wednesday.

His watercolours are a fascinating combination of detail and bold washes that catch the eye at a distance and offer a feast of detail for closer enjoyment. His nocturne studies are now a distinctive and highly collectable part of his work.

A selection of his work is available in print and it is proposed to add regularly to this collection of over 100 subjects in both open and limited editions. John's studio & Gallery, located in the heart of Whitby's East Side, is light and spacious and shows over 150 of his works, both Prints & Original Paintings.

His range of subjects also include his highly collectable Nocturne studies and a host of local places of interest from the very popular Robin Hoods Bay & Goathland to remote moorland farms and coastal scenes.

“I find the immediacy of watercolour exciting and stimulating. It enables me to combine my love of detail with broad areas where pigment, paper, and water create their own qualities. Since 1981, when my love affair with watercolours took hold, I have painted exclusively in that medium. But although subjects may vary, my real love has always been the more remote rural aspects of a given area. The un-renovated, the basic, and the dilapidated buildings are those which quicken the eye and the hand.”

“The legacy of my earlier oil painting days has had considerable bearing on the way my painting has developed, giving a different feel to my watercolours, and a strength not normally associated with the medium.”
