A full moon hanging over this classical, oft times painted, view of Whitby. The East Side of Whitby gives the most memorable view of this charming Yorkshire fishing port. A complex mix of cottages and houses huddle under the protection of the East cliff.
High above the town stands the ancient Abbey and St. Mary`s parish church. Lights and street lamps cast a warm glow which reflects across the River Esk where the moored boats ride. In this study John Freeman has carried his unique nocturne theme into a subject he has painted many times. With only a touch of artistic license the East Side comes alive, drawing you into the life of this old fishing community.
